Dos and Don’ts of using mosquito repellent on Babies and Toddlers

Not-Advisable

  • Not advisable to use chemical mosquito repellent for Babies under 2 months of age.
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothes for your child, as mosquitoes can bite through them.
  • Dark and Bright Coloured clothes and floral print attract more mosquitoes. Therefore, parents should avoid dressing up their kids in bright colors, especially at night.
  • Always check the label instruction for applying to kids’ bodies. It may cause irritations and allergic reactions.
  • For babies above 2 months of age, use the repellents with up to 30% of DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535.

Advisable

  • It’s advisable that parents should consider choosing full sleeves clothes for their kids while going and playing outdoors.
  • Use Mosquito Net at home to keep your kids safe from mosquito bites and a bed net will help them to sleep tight.
  • Choose light-weight cotton garments for the babies.
  • Use socks to cover the baby’s feet and cotton mittens for hands.
  • For more coverage of the time, you can re-apply the mosquito repellent, as its effect stays only for 4 to hours maximum. 
Roll-On Mosquito Repellent
  • Roll-On Repellent is the most preferred Mosquito Repellent by Parents for their kids. It contains eucalyptus and citronella oils, that helps in keeping mosquito away.
  • They also keep the kids away from Malaria, Dengue, and Chikungunya.
  • Apply 4 dots on your kid’s clothes in different areas like on the stomach, hand, feet, and backside. Remember not to apply the repellent directly to the skin. 
  • Some parents preferred to use the Roll-On Repellent on their Babies Cots, Prams, and Strollers.
  • Roll-On Repellent is safe for babies under two years old. 
Mosquito Repellent Patch 
  • It’s trendy and gives protection up to 12 hours, as promised by brands. You can use the patch for children up to 12 years of age. 
  • They get easily sticks on your kids clothes and it comes in different cartoon character shapes, which is loved by small kids. 
  • Many parents re-apply and re-use the patch, by re-filling them with the Roll-On Repellent. 
  • Free of DEET, DEBA, Transfluthrin, and other harmful chemicals.
  • Parents can put the patch on their kid’s school bags too. 
Mosquito Repellent Liquid Vaporizer
  • Never put any repellent directly to your child’s face or skin. Apply first on your child’s hands and then rub them, for safety precautions. Wait for some time, to see any kind of reaction. 
  • Some of the side effects of Liquid Vaporizer Repellent are Breathing problems, Eye Irritation, Dizziness, Nausea, etc.
  • The chemical is not safe for anyone to inhale, therefore also apply the liquid-repellent in the open areas. Use it in the open area, so that you don’t breathe them in. 
  • Do not use on wounds, cuts, scratches, to avoid irritation.
  • Don’t sleep in a closed room, after applying it. 
  • Easily available in the market and you get the refill bottles.
  • They are effective indoors and outdoors, but again you need to re-apply for more coverage of the time.
