A Practical Approach to Plastic Use

Plastic

We required a New Slogan, which says Zero-Use-Plastic.

In Today’s world, there are Two Things on which we need to focus (a) Growing More Trees (Forestation) and (b) Stopping Pollution & Use of Plastics.

A Lot of countries and organizations are working to reduce and ban the use of ‘Single-Use-Plastic’. But I strongly believe that we are missing out on one thing and that is ‘Zero-Use-Plastic’.

Look around and you will Observe Plastic that you never use for instance that Plastic Scoop that comes with Detergent. Who even (other than the people in ad-films) uses that Plastic Scoop to put Detergent into the Washing Machine? Similarly, we get covers for Toothbrush but those covers get misplaces in less than a few days. So why even make such unnecessary things which have ‘zero-use’.

Less Plastic More-Tree Agenda

Coming on to the Less Plastic More-Tree agenda, we all have come across/used /felt bad for those plastic bottles that come under ‘single use-plastic’ label and are finally crushed after they are used once.

Just imagine there is a person who decided to get Indoor Plants for his house seeing the Pollution outside. He goes to the nearby nursery buys a few plants along with some sand and pots made up of plastic. Now, this Plastic (pot) was specially manufactured to promote forestation. Isn’t this Ironical? Extra Plastic required for more plants???

Won’t it be better if we use the Single-Use-Plastic (Bottles Storage containers even Ice-Cream Boxes, etc) to plant trees in them instead of buying extra plastic? We already have a lot of plastic, don’t we? This problem is not too much amount of plastic rather it is too much mismanagement of plastic. And to all those who say that plants won’t survive in that plastic bottle; my answer is that plastic pot which is meant to grow plants is very much similar to the bottles and I have already implemented it successfully.

Moreover, being the smartest species on this plant we have the potential to do anything. If we can make Multi-storey Parking Slots to just park our cars then making a Multi-storey garden is just a piece-of-cake for us. All we need to do is to divert our attention from fruitless debated to fruitful discussion and implement them i.e. execute them.

Presently there are a lot of (almost all) schools organizing activities such as debate and other completions related to the environment. I highly critical of the way they implement it, organizing debates and asking kids to come up on stage and argue on environment, it would have been much better if they would have asked those kids to plant just one sapling each, in fact, those 4-5 kids together planting just one sapling would have been still better than those pointless debates.

Also, teaching children how to make paper bags out of newspaper has become a common activity these days. But what happens to these paper bags that they make? Thrown into the garbage or at best pasted on the walls of the school/institution ‘to show how much they care for the environment’ but in my opinion it would have been way more better if they would have donated these paper bags to shops that sell goods in polythene bags or even those which charge their customers for paper bags, it would have definitely made an impact, certainly greater than the zero impact that is created by pasting their hard work on the walls. What a waste of resources.

In India, we have an Old Tradition of storing water in an Earthen Pot or a ‘Matka’ to cool water without refrigerating it. Since the Earthen-Pot is made up of clay it is not advised to use it for more than 2-3 years. After those 2-3 years, one can use it to plant a sapling maybe a tomato or chilly sapling and create your kitchen garden and this way you don’t even have to buy plastic pots and you can save that earthen pot from being thrown and finally broken into pieces for no purpose.

The Advantages of Re-Using Plastic Bottles

# (Probably the Best Re-Use) of Single-Use Plastics and help to Save the Environment

# Bottles are durable enough, don’t under-estimate them. Plastic takes 400+ years to decompose, so your pot is going to live longer than you and your plant. By keeping it around soil you are also initiating its decomposition though it would be very less something is better than nothing.

# Can make Customized Pots for your Plants

# Above all, it motivates you and a lot of people around you to save Mother Nature and that’s just what we need.
