Consuming palm oil itself does not directly stop a child’s growth, but excessive or poor-quality palm oil in processed foods can indirectly harm a child’s development over time.

Palm oil is found in many everyday products, including biscuits, chocolates, instant noodles, ice cream, baby formula, and even soaps and shampoos. While it may seem harmless, it’s widespread and often unchecked use can impact toddlers and children in serious ways:

How Palm Oil Affects Children’s Growth

  1. Nutritional Imbalance
  • Many snacks and processed foods with palm oil are high in calories but low in nutrients, which may fill a child’s stomach but not support proper growth.
  • Overconsumption can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients (like protein, vitamins, iron), affecting height, brain development, and immunity.
  1. Harmful Compounds in Poor-Quality Palm Oil
  • When palm oil is repeatedly heated or poorly refined, it can produce toxic substances like 3-MCPD and glycidol.
  • These chemicals have been linked to kidney damage, developmental problems, and hormonal disruption in lab studies.
  1. Risk of Childhood Obesity
  • Foods with palm oil are often high in saturated fat and sugar, increasing the risk of early weight gain and obesity.
  • Obesity in early years can cause slower physical development, lower self-esteem, and higher chances of chronic illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure.

  • A diet heavy in palm-oil-based junk food may reduce intake of immune-boosting foods, making children more vulnerable to infections and slower to recover from illness.

Tips For Parents to Avoid the Threat 

  1. Read Food Labels Carefully
  • Check ingredients for “palm oil,” “vegetable oil,” or “hydrogenated fats.”
  • Avoid products with too many additives, preservatives, or trans fats.
  1. Limit Junk and Packaged Foods
  • Reduce intake of biscuits, instant noodles, chips, and chocolates made with palm oil.
  • Keep such foods as occasional treats, not daily snacks.
  1. Cook Fresh Meals at Home
  • Use healthier oils like olive oil, mustard oil, or ghee in home-cooked food.
  • Include more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lentils, and dairy in the child’s daily diet.
  1. Encourage Natural Snacks
  • Offer fruits, homemade sandwiches, boiled eggs, nuts, roasted snacks, or smoothies instead of packaged items.
  1. Educate Children Early
  • Teach kids to recognize unhealthy foods and make better choices—even in school or at parties.
  1. Support Ethical Brands
  • Choose products from brands that use RSPO-certified (sustainable) palm oil, which is better for health and the planet.

Healthy growth starts with balanced nutrition. Parents don’t need to eliminate palm oil completely, but they should minimize processed foods and focus on natural, home-cooked meals to help children grow strong and smart.
