Tips to Protect Your Infant against Sleep-Related Deaths (SIDS)
Do's
- Put Your Baby Sleep on their backs for the First Whole Year. Once, the Baby will get Older, the Baby with be able to roll from the back to his Stomach, which is natural.
- Its always recommended that Infants should sleep with their parents in the same room till they are 6 months old, for their safety. But, it would be wonderful if parents considered making their baby sleep with them in the same room till they turn ONE YEAR OLD. In some countries like India, they make their babies sleep with them till they become Toddlers i.e 3 to 4 years old.
- Be careful in choosing the baby mattress. It should be firm and that fit nicely in the crib covered with a fitted sheet. It’s very important, as it will keep your baby safe in the crib and the chances of the baby’s head getting stuck will be reduced.
- You can use a pacifier at Bedtime, it has been seen that it reduce the risk of SIDS.
What is the Right Age for Babies to Sleep in Their Own Rooms?
The best age to move the baby in his own room would be after they turn One Year Old (First Birthday). Till then baby can share their parent’s room to have comfortable and sweet sleep. As, we discussed above, keep your baby in your room, but in his or her own crib or bassinet.
Don'ts
- Avoid the Blankets, Bumpers, Pillows, and Stuffed toys in your baby crib/bed. it can increase the risk of SIDS.
- Always choose and buy the crib or bassinet as per your country’s Safety Standards.
- there should be no loose or hard objects in your infant bed, to avoid choking.
- Do not leave your infant baby alone in – A Stroller, Parents’ Bed, A Car seat, Infant Swing, and A Reclining Sleeper, etc.
- Don’t cover your Baby’s Face or Head to avoid Overheating.
- Choose loose and soft clothes for your Infant Baby, make him or her more comfortable.
What is the Best and Safe Position for Baby to Sleep?
Infants should be placed on their backs for sleep, as it is considered to be the best and safest position for an infant to sleep (as per the American Academy of Pediatrics). The reason behind recommending the baby to sleep on the back is maybe an infant who sleeps on her stomach gets less oxygen due to bedding pulled up around the baby’s nose.
Therefore, it’s recommended to place the baby on the back to sleep throughout their first year, to avoid the risk of SIDS. Especially, avoid the First Six Months, as Infant’s chances to die from SIDS are more.
