Skin Problems

Newborn Baby’s skin is much Thinner and Delicate as compared to an Adult’s Skin, and it also needs special care from its Parents. Babies can develop many types of skin problems and disorders shortly after they are born. A lot of these skin conditions will vanish within a few weeks, but skin conditions like Birthmarks will stay for a lifetime.

Skin Problems & Conditions which a Newborn Baby can have After Birth

1 # White Bumps on Newborn

All the babies are born with white bumps (know as milia), around their nose and face. These white bumps are caused due to the skin flakes that block oil glands. There is nothing to worry about, these white spots will be gone within a month. And, it does not irritate or harm the baby’s skin at all.

Some parents get scared after seeing too many white bumps on the newborn. But, there is nothing to worry about, as when a baby’s oil glands open up, these bumps will disappear on their own. Please don’t get into any myth and start using baby products and oil to remove or lighten it. Old Wives Tale:– Massaging with some oil around the nose and face will help get rid of it quickly, which is not true it will take its own pretty time to disappear.

2 # Yeast Infections

Yeast Infection again is very common in Babies. Some parents believe that yeast infection in the Baby’s Mouth, which is also called Thrush, can be a reason behind the development of yeast diaper rash. Yeast Infection (Candidiasis) is an infection caused by yeast on the skin and mucous membranes.

Below are a few reasons behind your baby may have  Thrush Problem:

1) Poor immune system – Infants who have a poor/immature immune system are unable to fight an infection that is caused, Rash.

2) Antibiotics – Antibiotics can be one of the reasons for the yeast to grow because the good bacteria(which fights yeast growth) present in the skin tissues are suppressed by the high amount of antibodies.

3) Steroid Drugs- When pregnant women are given steroid injections, the medication moves to the baby’s body and lungs through their bloodstream. And, due to which the child’s immune system decrease the ability to fight against any normal infections.

But, most of the parents get confused between the thrush and yeast diaper rash symptoms. Actually, it’s co-related, infants/babies who have thrush are more prone to have a yeast infection in the diaper area. Also, it was being seen that breastfeeding mothers who were on any kind of antibiotics are more likely to have a yeast diaper rash in their babies.

The Yeast Diaper rash can be identified as the dark red color rash, which look like a small red pimple at the edges and Sores that have pus in them. It can be painful and itchy sometimes.

We would advise you to consult with your pediatrician about the medication.

> For the Thrush (mouth), Anti-fungal medication will be given on the lesions in the mouth.

> For Yeast Diaper Rash, an Oral anti-fungal medication would be suggested.

Desquamation is a skin peeling, that affects most of the babies after birth, especially babies who come after their due dates. This skin peeling generally occurs on the hands, soles of the feet, and ankles of the babies. Newborns are covered in various fluids like amniotic fluid, blood, and vernix. Premature babies have more vernix.

Vernix is a thick coating that protects a newborn’s skin from amniotic fluid and once the vernix is gone, the baby will begin to shed the outer layer of their skin within four weeks.

4 # Prickly Heat Rash (Miliaria)

These heat rashes are caused due to sweating in the babies, especially on the chest, back, underarms, or neck. Generally, the babies born in hot weather (summer), are at increased chances of having a heat rash. You can identify it as a tiny red bump or pus-filled with fluid, which blocked the sweat ducts on the baby’s skin. Nothing to worry about them, parents can use talcum powder to comfort their baby. The best way to avoid heat rash is to use soft cotton clothes for your babies.

5 # Eczema

The Baby’s skin is too sensitive and prone to catch the infections like Eczema, It is a red rash and very common in babies. Generally, this rash is genetic and passes from generation to generation especially in families prone to allergies (Family History). In Babies, this rash usually gets triggered by the detergent powder, soap, lotions, etc. As an early sign of Eczema, you will notice a red and itchy rash, all over the body. 6 # Diaper Rash

This is the most common skin problem in babies and around 80% of babies get affected by diaper rashes. The reasons behind the diaper rash are mainly due to prolonged wet conditions inside the diaper i.e more than 30 to 40 minutes after the diaper reached its capacity.

During the monsoon season or winter season, babies are more prone to diaper rash. And, these red small spots are very itchy and babies find it difficult to sleep in the night. Some mothers don’t bother to check their baby’s diaper frequently, due to which their babies get diaper rash.

Babies in the age group of 0 to 6 Months needs the extra attention of their parents. In some cases, diaper rash can become fatal for your babies as it may trigger more serious skin problems. Therefore,  you should always consult with your pediatrician if the diaper rash is not gone in a few days even after applying talcum powder and rash lotions.

Some babies are born with cute red acne on their faces, again nothing to worry about. But, you need to take some precautions so that it doesn’t get worse. Avoid using any soap, cream on lotion in the effective area, until your doctor has advised you.

8 # Cradle cap

Some babies are born with a cradle cap, as it is caused by excess sebum presence at the roots of the infant’s hair. This happened when the old skin cells do not dry and fall off the baby’s scalp. Due to the excess sebum, it gets sticky. No need to worry again, consult your doctor. Generally, mild shampoo is given to get rid of it also you can use a baby comb to remove flakes manually.
